Describe the craziest or most fun story you have written.
I have covered so many things over a long career, including going to Serbia during a war, covering Hurricane Katrina, the degradation of coral reefs in Fiji, off-roading in the Sahara Desert. I am very fortunate.
What story or stories are you most proud of?
Being one of the first to report on Elon Musk’s strategy of using government subsidies and support to build is business empire.
What elements or characteristics do you look for in a story?
I like to see depth and context, third party and expert voices, data to back up the issue and support the premise. I like stories with tension and opposing viewpoints.
How long have you been in journalism and how did you get started?
I have been in journalism all my life starting with interviewing soon-to-be President Jimmy Carter for my high school newspaper.
Finish this sentence: If I am not reporting, I am spending time with family, taking the dog to the beach, going on a long bicycle ride or going for a walk,
What advice do you have for PR people that want to pitch you?
Stay on point. Don’t pitch things outside of my interest area. Don’t pitch stories we have already written. Read some of my work or our staff’s work before pitching. Make sure it is a real story and not just fluff you are getting paid to sell. It has to be news.
Any pet peeves with PR people?
Pitching me a story I have just written, pitching off-topic items, being helpful only when pitching and not helping when I come to you asking questions about your company or a client.
Tell us a little about yourself (family, interests, hobbies, background, some fact about you that few people know, etc.)
Serious cyclist, history buff, dog person, dad, former wine contest judge.
